Attending a christening is not an everyday event…

Many of us could probably count the number of christenings we’ll attend over our lifetimes on a single hand.
So — don’t feel alone in feeling overwhelmed or feeling like you have a bunch of unanswered questions to sort through…

We all have lots of questions!
But — we think we’ve been able to help filter through a lot of information in hopes of helping you quickly find answers to many of your questions;

Questions like;

From a parents perspective;

  • Do the people we chose to be our child’s godparents need to be Christian?
  • Do the godparents need to be from the same church or denomination as us?
  • Do the godparents have to be the same for all our children?
  • Do the godparents have to be married?
  • Is there anything that says that our godparents should (or should not) be family (like bothers/sisters)?
  • Do we (as the parents) need to have a christening gift prepared for our godparents?
  • Is there anything legally binding about a naming a godparent — and their role in my child’s life in case something were to happen to us?

From a godparent’s perspective

  • What’s my role as a godparent — leading up to the Christening?
  • What will I be expected to do/bring to the Christening?
  • What’s my role as a godparent — after the Christening?
  • What’s an appropriate Christening gift to give?
  • What makes a great christening gift?

And bigger picture questions like;

  • What does a Christening represent?
  • Are there certain prayers, blessings or psalms that are better to use than others for a christening?
  • What’s the difference between a baptism and christening anyway?
  • Is it true that baptisms are for boys and christenings are for girls?
  • As a grandparent — what’s my role in the christening?
  • Christening gift recommendations?
  • What other traditions are there that I should be aware of?

Trust us — you’re not alone in feeling confused…

They are all good questions!

And because we do sell a fair share personalized baby blankets for baptism and christening gifts, we’ve had to do a fair bit of research along the way.  So, we thought it might be helpful to offer up the insights we’ve picked up over the years. Hopefully, you’ll walk away feeling less intimidated and more informed in very short order.

Difference Between Baptism, Christening, and Dedication
The terms “Baptism” and “Christening” are used interchangeably by most churches. Today, there’s really not much difference between the two. Though, back in the day, the term Christening referred to the ceremony where a child was given a Christian name. Now, both typically mean “Baptism.” If you’re really worried about it, ask the parents (or if you are the parents, call the church and ask the secretary).

A dedication is a ceremony in which an infant is dedicated to God. Churches typically will hold a dedication ceremony when the church does not baptize infants.

Christening holy baby1 198x300 Personalized Baby Blanket: The Perfect Christening GiftChristenings have been going on for ages whether they are religious or otherwise. The idea of a christening is to introduce the newborn baby to family members and close friends that will likely have an influence on the child throughout its life. It is a time to celebrate a new addition to the family and invite others to join marvelous occasion.

Nothing could be more joyous than the arrival of a newborn baby. The question then becomes “What gift should I give for this wonderful occasion?”

That is where we come in. Fill in the Blankie offers personalized baby blankets that are more than your typical monogrammed blanket. Our blankies have a satin trim that any baby will love cuddling with. Each of these four sides are able to be customized to have your own special message to warm the hearts of baby and family. We also offer “sew cutes” which are icons that can be added to each corner. We made sure to have a variety of crosses along with angels and other religious related symbols if you choose to go that route.

The baby traditionally wears a Christening gown and wrapped in a white baptism blanket and is still common practice in many churches. Yet, if the church is less formal and isn’t traditional for a baby to wear a Christening gown, anything white will work. If you’re going to wrap the baby in one of our personalized baby blankets, a white baptism blanket is traditional, but almost any thread color is appropriate. Many churches now don’t require or even request that the baby wear white at their baptism, dedication, or christening ceremony. So, that opens colors up to a lot of other options. Also, if you don’t intend on using it in the ceremony, you can create a personalized christening blanket with any color you like!
